The RailOne mobile application, developed by Indian Railways, is witnessing a significant increase in popularity among rail passengers in the Jammu division, with a notable rise in the booking of unreserved tickets through the digital platform. This trend highlights a growing passenger preference for convenient and quick digital ticketing solutions.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that as of September 14, approximately 17 percent of passengers at major non-suburban stations categorized as NSG-1 to NSG-3 opted to book unreserved tickets via the app, bypassing traditional ticket counters. This figure rose to around 28 percent at stations falling under the NSG-4 to NSG-6 categories. Indian Railways classifies its non-suburban railway stations into six grades, with NSG-1 stations being the largest in terms of passenger volume and revenue generation.
Railway officials stated that the increasing adoption of the RailOne app signifies a shift in passenger behaviour, with more individuals preferring to book general or unreserved tickets using their mobile phones rather than waiting in queues at station ticket windows. This digital push is a strategic initiative by the Railways to promote its digital services and enhance travel convenience for passengers across the country.
To further incentivize the use of digital ticketing, the Railways has implemented a bonus scheme for passengers utilizing the R-wallet feature within the app. Individuals who recharge their R-wallet and subsequently book tickets through it are entitled to an additional three percent bonus on the amount recharged. This measure is designed to encourage greater engagement with the railway’s digital payment infrastructure.
The RailOne app is conceptualized as a comprehensive, all-in-one platform for Indian Railways’ passenger services. It consolidates a wide array of functionalities, including the booking of both reserved and unreserved tickets, purchasing platform tickets, checking PNR status, tracking live train movements, identifying coach positions, and accessing train arrival and departure information. The app aims to provide a seamless and integrated experience for all passenger-related needs.
Beyond ticketing and tracking, the application also facilitates passenger feedback and grievance redressal through the integrated Rail Madad service. Furthermore, passengers can order food directly through the app via the e-catering facility, adding another layer of convenience to their journey. These features collectively underscore the Railways’ commitment to leveraging technology for an improved passenger experience.
The overarching objective behind these digital initiatives, including the RailOne app and the R-wallet bonus scheme, is to streamline operations by saving passengers valuable time, reducing congestion and queues at railway stations, and promoting paperless travel. By migrating more services to digital platforms, the Indian Railways is aiming to modernize its service delivery and align with the nation’s broader digital transformation agenda.
