New Delhi, 15 June — Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has been hospitalised at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in the national capital for a stomach-related issue, the hospital said in a statement on Sunday. The 78-year-old leader is currently under the care of the hospital’s gastroenterology department and remains under observation.
This is the second time this year that the senior Congress leader has been admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for similar health concerns. In February, she had also been hospitalised for a stomach issue and was kept under medical observation for a day.
Earlier this month, Gandhi had undergone an MRI scan at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Hospital in Shimla after experiencing restlessness. She was rushed to the hospital from her private residence in Chharabra — a quiet town near the Rashtrapati Niwas ‘The Retreat’ — in the late afternoon, according to sources quoted by news agency IANS.
A doctor at IGMC had then confirmed that her blood pressure was “marginally higher than normal” but maintained that she was “normal and stable.” Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s principal media advisor, Naresh Chauhan, described the hospital visit as a “routine check-up” due to “some minor health issues.”
Following news of her condition, Chief Minister Sukhu curtailed his visit to Una and returned to Shimla to monitor the situation, a senior Congress leader told IANS.
A History of Recent Medical Visits
Sonia Gandhi’s health has been under close watch in recent years. In September 2022, she had travelled to the United States for a medical consultation — a trip delayed earlier by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her son, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, had accompanied her. The trip had caused her to miss a significant portion of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Just before that trip, Gandhi had directed a sweeping organisational reshuffle in the Congress party. At the time, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had confirmed her departure and expressed gratitude to those who extended wishes for her health.
Gandhi’s current residence in Chharabra, Shimla, known for its distinctive colonial-meets-Himachali architectural style with grey slate roofs, has become her preferred retreat in recent years.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the Congress party regarding her latest hospitalisation. However, party sources say she is stable and under continuous medical supervision.
