Thathri: The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Thathri in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir has conducted a comprehensive on-site inspection of ongoing civic and development projects across the town, directing officials to meet firm deadlines for completion to address public inconveniences.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, SDM Sheetal Sharma (JKAS) carried out the inspection on Thursday, accompanied by key officials including the Tehsildar Thathri, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department (Roads and Buildings), Assistant Executive Engineer of the Jal Shakti Department, and the Executive Officer of the Municipal Committee Thathri. The review focused on several critical infrastructure initiatives aimed at enhancing urban functionality in this sub-divisional headquarters located in the Chenab Valley region of Jammu and Kashmir.
During the visit along the circular route near the Army Gate, the SDM observed delays in the construction of a retaining wall, which is essential ahead of planned culvert work. The Executive Engineer, PWD (R&B), was instructed to complete the retaining wall within one week to facilitate smooth vehicular movement. The Station House Officer of Police Station Thathri received directions to manage traffic during the construction phase to reduce disruption for local commuters and residents.
Water supply issues were also highlighted when leakages were identified in pipelines near the circular road and in front of the State Bank of India branch. The Jal Shakti Department was ordered to undertake immediate repairs to restore uninterrupted supply and allow pending concrete works to proceed without further delay. These measures are intended to ensure reliable access to drinking water for households in the area.
The inspection extended to an unauthorised tea stall shed constructed near the office of the Assistant Registrar Cooperative Societies. The SDM directed the Executive Officer of the Municipal Committee and the Tehsildar to remove the encroachment promptly and submit a compliance report. Such actions underscore efforts to clear public spaces and prevent illegal occupations in the town.
At the site of tile paving work from National Academy Nallah to the Main Chowk, irregularities in the laying process came to light. The concerned contractor was instructed to redo the tiling to meet required standards, with close supervision from the Executive Officer of the Municipal Committee. This step aims to deliver durable road surfacing that withstands local weather conditions and heavy use.
Throughout the inspection, the SDM emphasised the need for inter-departmental coordination, strict adherence to quality norms, and timely execution of all projects. Officials were reminded that civic infrastructure development must prioritise public interest and avoid prolonged delays that affect daily life in Thathri, a growing town serving as an administrative and commercial hub in the hilly terrain of Doda district.
Thathri, situated in the Chenab Valley approximately midway between Doda town and Kishtwar, faces typical challenges of mountainous regions, including seasonal disruptions to roads and utilities.
