Srinagar, April 14 — The Jammu and Kashmir Police is set to escalate its campaign against drug trafficking, with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, VK Birdi, vowing swift legal action against peddlers and traffickers. The announcement comes as part of a sustained effort to combat the growing menace of drug abuse in the region.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that IGP Birdi stated the police have consistently operated in a mission mode to address the drug problem. He emphasized that in the coming days, law enforcement actions will be accelerated to ensure that those involved in drug peddling, smuggling, and trafficking face stringent legal consequences.
The IGP highlighted the critical importance of the region’s youth, describing them as the future of the country. He urged them to maintain discipline and actively steer clear of drug consumption, recognizing the detrimental impact of substance abuse on individuals and society.
The remarks were made by IGP Birdi on the sidelines of a function held in Srinagar. He took the opportunity to extend greetings to the Sikh community on the auspicious occasion of the creation day of Khalsa Panth. The IGP shared that he had visited a Gurudwara at the invitation of its management to pay obeisance and convey felicitations on behalf of the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
The intensified anti-drug campaign signifies the administration’s commitment to curbing the supply and demand of illicit substances. Drug trafficking has been identified as a significant challenge, contributing to social instability and posing a severe threat to public health, particularly among the youth. The police department aims to dismantle drug networks through coordinated efforts and intelligence-led operations.
Previous operations have seen significant seizures of contraband and arrests of individuals involved in the drug trade. However, authorities acknowledge that the problem requires a multi-pronged approach involving law enforcement, community engagement, and rehabilitation programs. The IGP’s call to the youth is a crucial element of this strategy, seeking to foster a culture of awareness and resistance against drug abuse.
Legal frameworks are in place to address drug-related offenses, with provisions for severe penalties for offenders. The Jammu and Kashmir Police intends to leverage these legal instruments to their fullest extent, ensuring that the penalties serve as a deterrent. The administration is also exploring avenues for enhanced collaboration with neighboring states and national agencies to tackle the trans-border nature of drug trafficking.
Community leaders and social organizations have been urged to play an active role in raising awareness and supporting individuals struggling with addiction. The IGP’s proactive stance reflects a broader governmental resolve to create a drug-free environment, safeguarding the well-being and future prospects of the population.
