Mumbai Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against an individual who allegedly posted abusive and derogatory content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Instagram. The action was taken following a complaint filed by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha worker.
The complainant, Deepak Singh, stated that he encountered a post on the Instagram account ‘teekhe_ladhke_no_1’ which he alleged used insulting and derogatory language against the Prime Minister. According to the complaint, the account holder misused deepfake technology to create a video that presented Prime Minister Modi in a negative light and contained highly offensive remarks. Singh also reported finding a similar video on Facebook attributed to an account named Nafees Alam.
The FIR has been lodged against the Instagram account holder under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to promoting enmity between different groups, intentional insult to provoke a breach of peace, public mischief, and defamation. Sections of the Information Technology Act have also been invoked in the case.
Police officials have initiated an investigation to track down the individual managing the Instagram account. Senior Inspector Dattatray Thakur of Bhoiwada police station confirmed that an investigation is underway, as reported by Indian Express. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the accused’s Instagram profile, which reportedly has a substantial following, has previously shared content critical of the BJP and Prime Minister Modi, including misleading posts and edited videos.
The alleged misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creating the video has drawn particular attention, given the growing concerns surrounding the spread of misinformation and defamatory material online through advanced technologies. Authorities are examining the manipulated footage and other associated posts to ascertain the full extent of any violations.
This incident is part of a broader trend of legal actions being taken against individuals for social media posts deemed offensive or defamatory towards political figures. In previous instances, individuals have been booked in Maharashtra for derogatory posts, including alleged objectionable videos or tweets against Prime Minister Modi and other political leaders.
The Mumbai Police are currently analyzing digital evidence related to the case and reviewing the social media activity linked to the accused to ensure comprehensive action is taken against the misuse of online platforms for spreading false narratives and damaging reputations.
