The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday levelled accusations against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging he was obstructing parliamentary proceedings to prevent a debate on the current government’s success in bringing fugitive offenders back to India. The party also condemned remarks made by Gandhi against the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), deeming them baseless.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia, addressing a press conference in the national capital, characterised Rahul Gandhi as an “immature and part-time” Leader of the Opposition. Bhatia suggested Gandhi was apprehensive of a comparative analysis between the performance of the Narendra Modi government and that of the preceding Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) administration.
“A very important subject needs to be discussed today. Everyone is wondering why the Leader of the Opposition, the immature, irresponsible, part-time Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, is not allowing Parliament to function. The Leader of the Opposition only works to divide the country. Standing with anarchic elements makes one anarchic as well,” Bhatia stated.
The BJP presented statistics indicating that between 2019 and 2026, the central government had successfully repatriated 274 fugitives from 36 different countries. The party cited this as evidence of its commitment to ensuring offenders face justice within India. Bhatia contrasted this with the UPA era, claiming an average of only four fugitives were brought back annually during that period, compared to approximately 40 per year under the current administration.
Marking the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, Bhatia referred to August 5 as a “historic day,” attributing the decision to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He further highlighted that the Modi government had recovered nearly ₹19,000 crore from returned fugitive offenders, alleging a lack of political will on the part of previous Congress governments to pursue such individuals.
Bhatia raised pertinent questions regarding the nature of the offences committed by the repatriated fugitives, noting that many were accused in serious criminal cases. He detailed the categories of offences, stating that 53 individuals were accused of sexual offences, including rape and crimes against children under the POCSO Act. Additionally, 42 faced charges related to organised crime and gangster activities; 18 were accused of human trafficking and kidnapping; and 17 were implicated in terrorist and anti-national activities. Bhatia explicitly stated that militants had been brought back, asserting that no one could harbour ill intentions towards India.
The BJP spokesperson also mentioned that the list included 16 individuals booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for drug trafficking and 12 accused in counterfeit currency and cybercrime cases. Several others were wanted for fraud and financial offences.
