SRINAGAR: Widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are anticipated across Jammu and Kashmir over the next seven days, with the Meteorological Centre Srinagar issuing advisories for potential natural hazards. The forecast indicates a continuation of these weather conditions for at least the next 24 hours, extending over the subsequent two days.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that while Kashmir is expected to experience scattered rainfall on Friday and Saturday, the intensity is predicted to become fairly widespread from August 16 onwards. The Jammu division, however, is forecast to see widespread rainfall on Friday, with fairly widespread to widespread activity anticipated during the following days.
The weather department has alerted residents and authorities to the possibility of isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph across both divisions throughout the seven-day forecast period. This weather pattern necessitates increased vigilance due to the heightened risk of natural disasters.
Authorities have cautioned about the potential for landslides, mudslides, flash floods, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas, particularly during periods of significant rainfall. Residents in hilly and low-lying areas are advised to take necessary precautions and remain alert to these risks.
Looking ahead to Saturday, Srinagar is expected to experience generally cloudy skies with chances of light rain or thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures are likely to hover around 30°C, with night temperatures dropping to approximately 21°C. In Jammu, similar conditions are forecast, with generally cloudy skies and light to moderate rain or thunderstorms. The maximum temperature in Jammu is expected to reach around 33°C, while the minimum temperature is predicted to be 27°C.
Recent meteorological data indicates that maximum temperatures over the past 24 hours have remained significantly above normal. In Kashmir, temperatures were 3-4°C above normal in many places, while in the Jammu division, they were 2-5°C above normal at several locations. The highest maximum temperature recorded in Kashmir was 33.8°C in Kupwara, and Kathua in the Jammu division recorded the highest at 38.2°C.
During the recent wet spell, light to moderate rainfall was recorded, with some places experiencing rather heavy downpours. Kathua registered the highest rainfall at 62.4 mm, closely followed by Bhaderwah with 62.2 mm. Minimum night temperatures have also been consistently above normal, ranging from 2-3°C above normal in many parts of Kashmir and 0-4°C above normal in several areas of the Jammu division.
The lowest minimum temperature in Kashmir was recorded in Gulmarg at 13.4°C, while in the Jammu division, Bhaderwah recorded a minimum of 15.5°C. The Meteorological Centre has reiterated its advice for people to remain vigilant in vulnerable areas, underscoring the importance of preparedness in light of the ongoing wet spell and its potential consequences.
