They also talked about coordinating their pandemic response and “their common commitment to enhancing the resilience and competitiveness” of their economies.
Trudeau’s Liberals won the emergency election on Monday, but they fell short of gaining an absolute majority in parliament following a bruising campaign.
The two North American leaders “reiterated the importance of the mutually beneficial Canada-US collaboration for the security and prosperity of both nations,” according to a statement from Trudeau’s office, and “agreed to meet together in person soon” to discuss bilateral cooperation.
According to the statement, Trudeau and Biden also “addressed China’s arbitrary arrest of Canadian citizens Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.”
Former US President Barack Obama endorsed Trudeau just days before Canadians voted to the polls, tweeting: “Justin has been an effective leader and strong champion for democratic principles.”
