Fugitive pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh is still on the run, and a manhunt is currently underway to arrest him, the police have said. Singh is a radical Sikh preacher and a sympathizer of the Khalistan movement, which seeks to establish a separate state for Sikhs in India.
Jalandhar Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal told reporters that Singh is now a fugitive, and the police are actively looking for him. Chahal also revealed that six to seven gunmen of Singh have been arrested.
The Punjab Government launched a major crackdown against Singh on Saturday, with police arresting 78 members of an outfit headed by him. However, Singh himself managed to escape when his convoy was intercepted in Jalandhar district.
In response to the operation, authorities have stepped up security in several places and suspended internet and SMS services in the state until Sunday noon.
The police have launched a massive state-wide cordon and search operation (CASO) against members of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ group, which is headed by Singh. The group is facing several criminal cases, and the police are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to apprehend its members.
The search for Singh is ongoing, and the police are confident that they will soon arrest him. In the meantime, they have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
