Powerful Irony: Chenab, the Electric Wonderland, Where Lights Play Hide and Seek

Chenab, known for its status as a hub of hydroelectric power projects, is facing a persistent electricity shortage, leaving its nearly 1 million residents, the Chenabis, grappling with power cuts, particularly during the harsh winter months.

During the Block Diwas program at Thathri on November 22, an Executive Engineer from the Power Development Department (PDD) Division Kishtwar shed light on the core issue. The Executive Engineer highlighted the bottleneck at the 33KV level, preventing the efficient transfer of electricity and leaving the Chenab region with a substantial shortfall against its requirement of nearly 40MW.

“The main problem we have here is the 33KV level power, because of which we can’t transfer more electricity,” stated the official during the program. In response to queries posed by DC Doda Harvinder Singh regarding potential solutions, the official outlined a long-term remedy. “If a fresh line is installed, which costs about 1 crore, then there are chances of improving electricity,” the official added.

DC Doda Harvinder Singh urged collaboration from public representatives to address the issue, proposing the creation of a plan that involves contributions from their budgets. The aim is to facilitate the installation of the necessary infrastructure and ultimately improve the electricity situation in the Chenab region.

Asif Butt, a local Chenabi resident, expressed his concerns, stating, “We are facing frequent power cuts, especially in the winters, which makes our daily lives challenging. Despite being surrounded by hydroelectric power projects, we often find ourselves in the dark.”

Sarwar Butt, another Chenabi resident, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for urgent action. “It’s disheartening to see our Chenab region, known for its contribution to electricity generation, struggle with power shortages. The authorities need to prioritize the installation of the proposed line to alleviate this issue,” Sarwar Butt remarked.

The call for collaboration and financial contribution from public representatives indicates a collective effort to find a sustainable solution to the electricity shortage in the Chenab region. As the debate unfolds, the Chenabis await tangible measures to ensure uninterrupted power supply, aligning with the region’s significant role in contributing to the national power grid.
