Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday appealed to the Centre to include pictures of Hindu deities Lakshmi and Ganesh on Indian currency notes. AAP National Convenor said that adding images of Hindu deities alongside those of Mahatma Gandhi will help India thrive.
The Delhi Chief Minister made it clear that he was asking for new currency notes with images of Lakshmi and Ganesh rather than changing the existing notes. “New currency notes are printed every day. Then, these pictures can be added,” Kejriwal said, adding that the two gods were associated to prosperity.
“Despite having only a small percentage of Hindus—around 2-3%—Indonesia is a country with a majority Muslim population… Speaking at a press conference in the National Capital, Kejriwal said, “If Indonesia can do it, why can’t we do it?”
The AAP leader added that he would soon write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the matter.
“Despite making efforts, sometimes our efforts do not fructify if gods and goddesses are not blessing us. I appeal to PM (Modi) to have photos of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi on our currency (notes).” PTI quoted him as saying.
The AAP leader challenged the BJP, which has ruled Gujarat for the past 27 years, to name one accomplishment there before the assembly elections.
Speaking about the upcoming MCD elections, Kejriwal said that the AAP is ready and that he was confident Delhi residents would reject the BJP. Elections for the MCD are scheduled for December.
