The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed its fifth supplementary chargesheet in the 2014 case involving links to the Islamic State (ISIS), this time against Areeb Majeed, a former engineering student. The latest chargesheet, filed before the special NIA court in Mumbai, includes the charge of raising funds for terror activities.
Majeed, who hails from Kalyan in Thane district, is already on trial for various terrorist acts and offenses. The inclusion of Section 17 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which pertains to raising funds for terrorist organizations, marks a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings against him. Majeed is reportedly the only individual arrested in this particular case.
The 2014 case, which has seen multiple supplementary chargesheets filed by the NIA, concerns individuals suspected of having ISIS affiliations. The NIA’s investigation aims to uncover and prosecute those involved in supporting or engaging with the designated terrorist group. The agency has been systematically building its case, with each chargesheet adding further details and legal grounds for prosecution.
The NIA’s proactive approach in filing supplementary chargesheets indicates a continuous effort to thoroughly investigate and address all facets of the alleged conspiracy. By adding the charge of terror funding, the agency seeks to hold Majeed accountable for potentially financing the activities of a proscribed terrorist organization, further underscoring the seriousness of the charges he faces.
The legal process is expected to continue, with the court set to examine the evidence presented in the fifth supplementary chargesheet. The NIA’s sustained efforts in this case highlight the agency’s commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring that individuals involved in such activities are brought to justice under the relevant laws of the land.
