Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow on Monday following a tragic bus accident in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in significant loss of life. The incident occurred near the Jalo area on the Ramnagar-Udhampur route.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Prime Minister conveyed his condolences through a message on X, stating his pain over the incident and extending heartfelt sympathies to the families of those who perished. He also offered prayers for the swift recovery of the individuals who sustained injuries.
The Prime Minister announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). He stated that Rs 2 lakh would be provided to the next of kin of each person who lost their life in the accident. Additionally, Rs 50,000 would be given to those who were injured.
Earlier on Monday, fifteen people were confirmed dead and sixteen others were injured when a passenger bus veered off the road in the Udhampur district. The exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation by local authorities. Emergency services and local administration were quick to respond to the scene, providing immediate medical assistance to the injured and coordinating rescue efforts.
The Ramnagar-Udhampur route is known for its challenging terrain, with winding roads and steep gradients, which can pose risks to drivers, particularly during adverse weather conditions or at night. Traffic police and regional transport authorities often issue advisories regarding safe driving practices in such areas. The frequency of accidents on such routes, while not uncommon, underscores the importance of strict adherence to traffic regulations and regular vehicle maintenance checks.
This incident has brought renewed attention to road safety measures in the hilly regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Local administrations have been urged in the past to improve road infrastructure, install better safety barriers, and increase surveillance to prevent such tragedies. The recurring nature of accidents in similar geographical areas prompts ongoing discussions about the need for enhanced public transport safety protocols and driver training programs.
The local administration in Udhampur has initiated a formal inquiry into the circumstances leading to the bus accident. Officials have been tasked with examining all potential factors, including road conditions, vehicle fitness, and the speed at which the bus was travelling. The findings of this inquiry are expected to inform future safety measures and preventative actions aimed at reducing road-related fatalities and injuries in the region.
