Jammu and Kashmir Receives First Special Amul Milk Freight Train from Gujarat

JAMMU, April 22: In a significant logistical achievement, the Jammu division of Indian Railways has successfully facilitated the arrival of the first-ever special milk freight train from Gujarat, bolstering the supply of dairy products to Jammu and Kashmir.

The Chenab Times has learned that railway authorities have termed the development a “historic achievement,” underscoring its role in enhancing food security and ensuring the consistent availability of nutritious dairy products across the Union Territory. The initiative also highlights the Indian Railways’ dedication to strengthening supply chains to remote regions.

The specialized freight train, consisting of 20 BCN wagons laden with dairy products from the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), commenced its journey from Linch Goods Shed in Ahmedabad Division on April 20. It subsequently arrived at the Bari Brahman and Anantnag goods sheds in Jammu Division.

Officials reported that 10 wagons were discharged at Bari Brahman, and the remaining 10 at Anantnag. Each wagon was estimated to carry approximately 500 tonnes of dairy products, including toned milk, milk powder, buttermilk, and lassi, all vital dairy items for the region’s population.

Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, expressed pride in the milestone, stating, “The arrival of the first special cargo train carrying Amul milk and dairy products has been planned keeping in mind the needs of citizens, traders, and families of Jammu and Kashmir. It will ensure round-the-clock availability of fresh dairy products across Jammu and adjoining areas.” He further noted that this direct rail linkage is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs and transit times compared to traditional road routes, thereby benefiting local markets and consumers.

Recalling a previous logistical success, officials mentioned that in October 2025, the division had facilitated the rail transport of a 1,350-tonne consignment of industrial salt from Kharaghoda, Gujarat, to Anantnag. The current initiative is anticipated to further fortify commercial and economic ties between Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir, establishing a direct link for dairy and industrial sectors to markets within the Kashmir Valley.

The Jammu division of Indian Railways indicated that such forward-thinking initiatives will continue to be implemented to improve logistical efficiency, foster regional economic growth, and ensure supply chain stability throughout Jammu and Kashmir.
