Two individuals have died and two others are missing after a vehicle carrying them plunged into a nallah near Chhattapani along the treacherous Mughal Road. The incident occurred following snowfall that rendered the road slippery.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that a search and rescue operation was launched on Tuesday after the four individuals were reported missing on Monday. Officials stated that the vehicle was located in a nallah at Chhattapani during the operation. Two bodies were recovered from the site, while efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining two missing persons. The identification of the deceased is currently being ascertained, and further investigations into the incident are underway.
The Mughal Road, connecting the twin districts of Poonch and Shopian in Jammu and Kashmir, is particularly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions, especially during winter months. Frequent snowfall can lead to temporary closures and create hazardous driving conditions. The road’s steep gradients and sharp turns, coupled with limited visibility during snowfall or fog, increase the risk of accidents.
The incident highlights the persistent challenges faced in maintaining safe passage along mountain roads in the region, particularly during periods of heavy precipitation. Authorities often issue advisories and deploy personnel to manage traffic and respond to emergencies, but the unpredictable nature of the weather can still lead to tragic outcomes. The recovery of the vehicle from the nallah indicates the severity of the fall, suggesting the vehicle likely went off the road due to reduced traction and possibly poor visibility.
The search for the missing individuals is a priority for the local administration and rescue teams. The mountainous terrain and the potential for the vehicle to have been submerged or carried further by water currents complicate rescue efforts. The area where the accident occurred, Chhattapani, is known for its challenging topography. Families of those missing are anxiously awaiting updates as the operation continues.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police and local disaster management units are coordinating the rescue and recovery operations. The investigation aims to determine the exact cause of the accident, which may include factors such as excessive speed, mechanical failure, or the immediate impact of the slippery conditions on the driver’s control. The recovery of the vehicle is a crucial step in understanding the dynamics of the fall.
