Himachal Pradesh: 118 Candidates Vie for Una Local Body Polls

A total of 118 candidates are contesting in the upcoming urban local body elections in Himachal Pradesh’s Una district, following the conclusion of the nomination process. Polling is scheduled for May 17 in the nagar panchayats of Gagret, Amb, Tahliwal, and Daulatpur Chowk, as well as the Municipal Councils of Mehatpur-Basdehra and Santoshgarh. The counting of votes will take place on May 31.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that 28,291 voters, including 14,094 women, are eligible to cast their ballots in these elections. Among the electorate, 283 are first-time voters.

To facilitate the smooth conduct of the urban local body elections, 48 polling stations have been established across the district. Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be utilized for the polling process. A special monitoring cell has been set up within the Deputy Commissioner’s office complex to oversee the electoral proceedings.

Concurrently, the nomination process commenced on Thursday for elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) across all 249 panchayats in the district. This phase of elections encompasses 17 Zila Parishad seats and Panchayat Samiti seats within five development blocks. Additionally, elections will be held for the posts of pradhan and up-pradhan in all 249 panchayats, along with 1,515 ward member seats.

The Panchayati Raj Institution elections are slated to be conducted in three phases, with polling on May 26, May 28, and May 30. These local body elections are a crucial step in the democratic process at the grassroots level, allowing citizens to elect their representatives for both urban and rural governance structures in Una district.

The nomination period for the PRI elections, which began on Thursday, will be followed by scrutiny of nominations and withdrawals, leading up to the polling dates. District election officials have been working to ensure that all arrangements are in place for fair and transparent elections in both urban and rural settings within the district.

The elections for the urban local bodies involve direct voting for the members of nagar panchayats and municipal councils, who will then be responsible for the day-to-day administration and development of their respective areas. The process of nomination and scrutiny is a critical stage that filters candidates before the electorate casts their votes.

The announcement of the final list of candidates marks the beginning of the campaign period, during which candidates will engage with voters to present their manifestos and seek support. The Election Commission of India, through its district machinery, oversees these processes to uphold electoral integrity and ensure compliance with the Model Code of Conduct.

The district administration has emphasized the importance of voter turnout and has appealed to citizens to exercise their right to vote. Efforts are underway to ensure that all eligible voters have access to information about polling stations and the candidates contesting. The successful conduct of these elections is vital for the effective functioning of local governance and for addressing the specific needs and concerns of the communities in Una district.
