Powerful Storm in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly Injures Man, Claims Multiple Lives

A man was violently thrown approximately 50 feet into the air, along with a tin roof, before landing in a field amidst a severe storm that battered Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, claiming at least four lives. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, was captured in a video circulating on social media, initially prompting disbelief due to its dramatic nature.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the man, identified as Nanhe Mian, a resident of Bamiyana village and an e-rickshaw driver, sustained multiple injuries, including a fractured arm and leg. Nanhe Mian, approximately 50 years old, recounted that he had gone to a wedding hall to collect items when the storm intensified. He stated that the wind was so powerful it caused the tin shed to make loud noises. Fearing it would be blown away, he grabbed a rope attached to the shed. A subsequent, exceptionally strong gust of wind lifted both him and the shed into the air, carrying him about 50 feet before the storm subsided, leading to his fall.

The Bareilly Police confirmed in a statement that Nanhe Mian was inside the wedding hall in Bamiyana when strong winds and rain tore away the tin roof of the structure. Nanhe Mian, who lives with his wife and five children, is recovering from injuries to his head, back, arms, and legs.

Across Uttar Pradesh, Wednesday witnessed devastating weather phenomena, with the state government reporting a grim toll of at least 89 fatalities and around 50 injuries due to storm and rain-related incidents. Numerous animals also perished, and widespread damage to houses and shops was reported in various parts of the state. In Bareilly specifically, four individuals lost their lives between 8:30 am and 11:30 pm on Wednesday. Additionally, nine animals died, and approximately 30 houses suffered significant damage, according to official reports.

The adverse weather conditions that swept through Bareilly not only caused fatalities and injuries but also widespread destruction. The incident involving Nanhe Mian highlights the sheer ferocity of the winds, which were capable of lifting heavy objects and people into the air. Local authorities have been engaged in rescue and relief operations in the affected areas. The extent of damage to infrastructure, including homes and public facilities, is still being assessed by district officials.

The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated measures to provide assistance to the families of those who lost their lives and to those who have been injured or displaced. Relief packages and compensation are being distributed as per established protocols. Emergency services were mobilized across the state to respond to the widespread impact of the storms. Reports indicate that several districts experienced heavy rainfall, leading to localized flooding in addition to the high winds.

The Meteorological Department had issued warnings for severe weather in several parts of North India, including Uttar Pradesh, anticipating strong winds, thunderstorms, and hailstorms. The intensity of the storm in Bareilly, however, appears to have surpassed initial expectations, leading to the tragic loss of life and significant property damage. Investigations into the exact causes of the structural failures that led to injuries and fatalities are underway, focusing on building codes and the impact of extreme weather events on vulnerable structures.

The impact of these storms underscores the vulnerability of communities to extreme weather events, particularly those residing in less structurally sound dwellings. Efforts are being made to reinforce infrastructure and improve early warning systems to mitigate future risks. The collective response from state agencies, local administration, and emergency services aims to provide immediate relief and support to those affected by the severe weather outbreak across Uttar Pradesh.
