A 20-year-old woman, who had been preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for several years, allegedly died by suicide at her residence in the Azadpur area of northwest Delhi, authorities reported on Friday.
In a development that has raised questions about procedural adherence, the family of the deceased subsequently transported her body to a crematorium without notifying the police, according to a senior police official.
The circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death remain under investigation. No suicide note was discovered at the scene, leaving the precise reasons behind her taking the extreme step yet to be determined.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, a PCR call was received by the Adarsh Nagar police station on Thursday evening. The call informed authorities that a woman’s body had been brought to the Kewal Park Shamshan Ghat for cremation without prior police intimation.
Upon receiving the information, a police team was promptly dispatched to the crematorium. There, they identified the deceased as a resident of Lal Bagh in Azadpur. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the woman had allegedly died by suicide at her home earlier on the same day.
The family, when questioned, reportedly stated they were unaware of the necessary legal formalities. They claimed to have proceeded with taking the body to the crematorium to perform the last rites without informing the authorities.
In accordance with standard procedure for such cases, the police have moved the body to the mortuary of the Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital for a post-mortem examination. This examination is crucial to ascertain the exact cause of death.
A forensic team has visited the woman’s residence in Lal Bagh, Azadpur, to meticulously inspect the scene of the alleged suicide. The team collected potential evidence that may shed light on the incident.
The incident comes amidst ongoing discussions and scrutiny surrounding the NEET examination process. The National Testing Agency (NTA) had recently cancelled the NEET (Undergraduate) exam held on May 3, following widespread allegations of a paper leak. A re-examination has been scheduled for June 21, impacting countless aspirants across the country.
The pressure associated with competitive entrance examinations in India is a well-documented concern, with numerous students dedicating years to preparation. Incidents of extreme stress and despair among aspirants have periodically come to light, prompting calls for greater mental health support systems within the education framework.
