Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-backed candidates have secured a significant victory in the Mandi Zila Parishad elections in Himachal Pradesh, consolidating the party’s political dominance in the district. The results mark a considerable setback for the Congress party, which had hoped to gain ground.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that candidates officially supported by the BJP won 25 out of the 36 Zila Parishad seats. In contrast, Congress-backed candidates secured only five seats, while candidates supported by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) won two seats. The remaining four seats were claimed by Independent candidates.
The election outcome further solidifies the BJP’s political standing in Mandi, a district that has increasingly become a stronghold for the party within Himachal Pradesh. The BJP’s winning candidates registered victories across numerous wards, including Nagwain, Syog, Kataula, Thachi, Lower Karsog, Sarahan, Dehar, Kot Balh, Behal, Kot Gopalpur, Sadhana, Kotli, Sari, Nvahi, Sohar, Batheri, Khilra, Majhothi, Basa, Rod, Baryogi, Churag, Nergharwasada, Savi, and Naun. The Congress-supported winners were declared in Salapar, Lower Rewalsar, Thauna, Tihra, and Mahadev wards. The CPM candidates emerged victorious in Bhadyada and Kufri wards.
This electoral performance in the Zila Parishad elections adds to the Congress party’s recent string of electoral disappointments in Mandi. Earlier, the party had experienced a weak showing in the Mandi Municipal Corporation elections. Despite extensive campaigning efforts by key party figures, including Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh, the Congress managed to win only one of the 14 wards in the municipal corporation polls.
The trend observed in the Zila Parishad elections mirrors the results of the 2022 Assembly elections. In that contest, the BJP secured victory in nine out of the ten Assembly constituencies within Mandi district. The consistent electoral success in local body polls and assembly elections underscores the growing influence of the BJP in the region and poses significant electoral challenges for the Congress party as it prepares for future contests.
