SRINAGAR: A woman has died from injuries sustained in a tree collapse incident that occurred during a windstorm in Anantnag district, officials confirmed on Wednesday. Her death brings the total fatalities from the incident to two, following the death of her husband the previous day.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the couple, residents of the Brariangan area in Shangus, were critically injured on Tuesday when a tree, uprooted by strong winds, fell on them near the Ganjiwara area of Anantnag town. The intense weather conditions led to the tree’s collapse.
The deceased woman was identified as Marina, wife of Mohammad Rafiq Khan. She passed away on Wednesday while receiving medical treatment for her injuries. Her husband, Mohammad Rafiq Khan, had succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag on Tuesday. His wife had remained in a critical condition before her eventual passing.
The local police have registered a case regarding the incident and have initiated further proceedings. The circumstances surrounding the tree’s uprooting and subsequent fall are under investigation.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by extreme weather events. Uprooted trees have previously caused fatalities and significant damage across Jammu and Kashmir during severe windstorms. Authorities often issue advisories during such periods, urging residents to exercise caution and avoid venturing into open areas or near tall trees.
The geographical terrain of the region, particularly areas with mature trees lining roads or residential zones, can increase the risk of such accidents during periods of high winds. Following such incidents, concerns are often raised regarding urban planning, tree management practices, and the safety of public infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
In the aftermath of the event, local administration officials stated that assessments would be conducted to identify and address potential hazards posed by trees in public spaces, particularly in densely populated areas or along transportation routes. Efforts to clear fallen trees and restore normalcy were underway in the affected parts of Anantnag district.
