Jammu, June 4: Sunil Sharma, the Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, has sharply criticized Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Sharma accused Abdullah of making irresponsible and emotional statements without considering their consequences.
Sharma specifically questioned the purpose of a recent meeting held by National Conference legislators led by Omar Abdullah in Srinagar’s Dachigam area. He described the gathering as a “picnic” and alleged that it was a pseudo floor test designed to gauge loyalty within the ruling party, driven by Abdullah’s perceived paranoia about his government’s stability. Sharma suggested that Abdullah was more focused on retaining support among legislators than addressing the basic civic issues faced by the public.
The Leader of Opposition highlighted that residents across Jammu and Kashmir were grappling with problems related to electricity, drinking water, roads, and education. He contrasted this with the Chief Minister’s decision to convene meetings at a tourist destination, implying a disconnect between the administration and the common people’s needs. Sharma also referenced earlier political remarks made by Abdullah, suggesting that claims of creating a “cloudburst” or “bombshell” in politics had failed to materialize.
Speaking to reporters, Sharma urged Abdullah to exercise restraint and responsibility in his public comments, stating, “I’ve already made it crystal clear that Omar Abdullah, if you have any sense of honour, don’t talk like a child. You are the Chief Minister; words from your mouth should be those that come from a responsible person.” He also alleged that the National Conference had a history of supporting separatism and defending militants, implying that the party’s actions had contributed to periods of violence in Kashmir.
Sharma’s remarks follow a review and strategy session Abdullah held with National Conference legislators at Dachigam National Park. The Chief Minister had stated that the meeting was intended to assess the governance of the NC-led administration over the preceding 19 months. However, Sharma dismissed this, characterizing it as a loyalty test rather than a genuine review. He accused Abdullah of undermining the Assembly’s decorum with inappropriate language and pursuing policies that benefited elites while neglecting the needs of ordinary citizens, citing issues such as outsourcing of jobs and dilapidated road conditions.
