New Delhi: Ahead of the scheduled NEET-UG 2026 re-examination on June 21, the Indian government has imposed temporary restrictions on access to the messaging platform Telegram. The measure aims to prevent the spread of misinformation, fake question papers, and alleged examination-related fraud, ensuring the integrity of the crucial medical entrance test.
The Chenab Times has learned that the restrictions, which began on Tuesday, will remain in effect until June 22. In addition to blocking access, the government has directed Telegram to disable its message-editing feature until June 30. These directives were issued following recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA), which has been actively seeking to safeguard the examination process amidst recent controversies surrounding the NEET-UG.
NTA’s Concerns Prompt Government Action
Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) stated that the directions were necessitated by the NTA’s concerns that existing methods of taking down specific channels on Telegram had proven insufficient. Organised networks have allegedly been exploiting candidates by making false claims of paper leaks and attempting to manipulate the examination process.
The NTA has welcomed the government’s decision, asserting that the temporary measures are crucial for protecting candidates from fraudulent activities and the proliferation of misleading content online. The agency highlighted that numerous Telegram channels, operating under names such as “PAPER LEAKED NEET”, “Re-NEET 2026”, and “Private Mafia”, had reportedly solicited substantial payments from candidates and their families. These solicitations were in exchange for purported access to examination papers, promising undue advantages.
Enhanced Security for NEET-UG Retest
The current restrictions are part of a comprehensive strategy by the authorities to curb malpractices, limit the dissemination of false information, and guarantee a fair and transparent examination experience for the hundreds of thousands of students participating in the re-test. The NEET-UG 2026 re-examination is slated to take place on June 21 at designated examination centres across the country. Significant enhancements in security protocols and monitoring mechanisms are being implemented to ensure the credibility of the examination.
The NEET-UG exam is a highly competitive national-level entrance test for admission to undergraduate medical courses in India. The recent controversies have led to heightened scrutiny and increased efforts by the government and the NTA to uphold the examination’s sanctity.
