SRINAGAR: Eight traditional handicraft products from the Union Territory of Ladakh have been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) status, a significant move to provide legal protection to the region’s time-honored crafts and enhance their standing in both national and international markets.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the newly registered GI-tagged products include Ladakh Challi Textiles, Ladakh Thigma, Ladakh Painting, Pabu of Ladakh, Ladakh Nambu Textile, Ladakh Pashmina Textile, Ladakh Chilling Metal Work, and Ladakh Likir Pottery.
These latest registrations represent a substantial expansion of Ladakh’s GI portfolio and are anticipated to play a crucial role in preserving indigenous knowledge, shielding traditional craftsmanship from imitation, and improving market opportunities for local artisans.
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag functions as a form of intellectual property protection, conferred upon products that exhibit specific qualities, reputation, or characteristics intrinsically linked to a particular geographical origin. This certification is instrumental in safeguarding the authenticity of traditional products and enables producers to differentiate their offerings in competitive marketplaces.
The eight newly recognized products showcase the diverse cultural traditions of Ladakh, encompassing a range from intricate textiles and paintings to detailed metalwork and distinctive pottery. The GI status is expected to elevate the visibility of these crafts, reinforce consumer trust in genuine Ladakhi products, and foster greater economic benefits for the artisan communities.
Official statements indicated that this recognition will aid in the preservation of traditional skills that have been passed down through generations, while simultaneously promoting sustainable livelihoods tied to heritage-based industries.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, R.K. Mathur, hailed the recognition as a tribute to Ladakh’s centuries-old craftsmanship and rich cultural legacy.
“The conferment of GI status on these eight traditional Ladakhi products is a matter of immense pride for the people of Ladakh. These recognitions are not merely certifications; they are a tribute to the centuries-old craftsmanship, artistry, and cultural heritage of our people,” stated Lieutenant Governor Mathur, underscoring the significance of the achievement.
With these recent additions, Ladakh continues to strengthen its representation on India’s GI map. Previously, products such as Raktsey Karpo Apricot, Ladakh Pashmina, and Shing-Tsak had also received GI recognition, further highlighting the unique distinctiveness of the region’s agricultural and artisanal outputs.
The inclusion of these eight new GI-tagged handicrafts is poised to further bolster ongoing efforts to conserve Ladakh’s cultural heritage. Concurrently, it aims to provide artisans with enhanced protection, greater recognition, and improved access to broader markets, thereby supporting their economic well-being and the continuation of their craft.
