SRINAGAR: The Indian Wushu Team, poised to compete in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Wushu Championship in China, met with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday in Srinagar.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the team, under the leadership of National Chief Coach of India and Dronacharya Awardee Kuldeep Handoo, is scheduled to depart for China on June 23, 2026. Following the championship in Hubei Province, the contingent will participate in a month-long foreign exposure training program at Beijing Sport University.
During the interaction, Chief Minister Abdullah extended his best wishes to the entire team. He expressed confidence in their capabilities to perform well at the international competition and urged them to strive for excellence. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of bringing laurels to the nation through outstanding performances and making the country proud.
The Chief Minister also assured the team and its leadership of the government’s commitment to providing all possible support for the promotion and development of Wushu and other sports disciplines across Jammu and Kashmir. This commitment underscores the administration’s focus on fostering athletic talent within the Union Territory.
The meeting was attended by several prominent coaches and support staff. Among those present were coaches Amit Pal from the Army, Aparna from the Income Tax Department, Divanshi from Rajasthan, Ansa Chishti and Surya Bhanu Pratap Singh from Jammu and Kashmir, Aryan from Haryana, and Suraj Yadav from Uttar Pradesh. The medical support staff, including Dr Ehsaan from Jammu and Kashmir and Dr Mahira from Uttar Pradesh, were also in attendance.
The SCO Wushu Championship serves as a significant platform for athletes to showcase their skills on an international stage. The inclusion of a foreign exposure training program further aims to enhance the team’s preparedness and competitive edge by allowing them to train at a world-class facility like Beijing Sport University.
Wushu, a modern Chinese martial art that combines traditional martial arts with full-contact sparring, has been gaining popularity in India. The Dronacharya Award, received by Chief Coach Kuldeep Handoo, is one of India’s highest sporting honours, recognizing excellence in sports coaching. The participation of athletes from various states, alongside representatives from Jammu and Kashmir, signifies the unified effort of the Indian contingent.
The team’s upcoming itinerary reflects a strategic approach to international sports engagement, balancing competitive events with advanced training opportunities. The support pledged by the Chief Minister is expected to bolster the morale of the athletes and contribute to the long-term growth of Wushu in the region.
