SRINAGAR: Normal life was significantly disrupted across Ladakh on Tuesday as a complete shutdown was observed in response to a bandh call jointly issued by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). The protest action affected business activities in both Leh and Kargil districts.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that markets, business establishments, and commercial activities remained closed in numerous areas as residents extended their support to the shutdown. However, transport services largely continued to operate, aiming to mitigate inconvenience for the public and visiting tourists.
The bandh was initiated by the LAB and KDA to protest perceived delays in the implementation of assurances made during a meeting with Union government representatives in New Delhi on May 22. The organizations also voiced their discontent regarding the alleged failure to accurately record the agreed points in the official minutes of the meeting.
Leaders representing the two bodies asserted that critical issues pertaining to Ladakh’s political and constitutional future were either omitted or insufficiently represented in the official record of discussions. This, they stated, has fostered growing mistrust among stakeholders within the region.
The current agitation is intrinsically linked to a series of long-standing demands advocated by the LAB and KDA. These demands encompass the provision of constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, the protection of land and employment rights for local residents, enhanced local participation in governance, and the implementation of other measures designed to preserve the interests of the region’s inhabitants.
The call for the shutdown was formalized following a meeting of the joint core committee of the LAB and KDA. During this meeting, dissatisfaction was expressed over the outcomes of recent engagements with the central government. The committee issued a warning against further delays in addressing the concerns articulated by Ladakh’s representatives.
Lukruk Dorjey, Chairman of the Leh Apex Body, characterized the shutdown as one of the most significant region-wide demonstrations witnessed in Ladakh in recent months. He noted that it reflects the ongoing public concern over unresolved issues related to governance, the necessity of constitutional protections, and regional representation.
No major untoward incidents were reported during the period of the shutdown.
