Health authorities in Amritsar have significantly ramped up anti-dengue efforts following the discovery of dengue larvae at 22 different locations across the city. The intensified surveillance campaign aims to curb the spread of the mosquito-borne disease by identifying and addressing potential breeding grounds.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, health officials confirmed that strict measures are being implemented to prevent an outbreak. Notices are being issued to individuals and entities found non-compliant with dengue prevention guidelines, signalling a more assertive approach from the department.
The Health Department has mobilised over 125 surveillance teams throughout the district. These teams are conducting comprehensive door-to-door checks, meticulously inspecting various sites such as water containers, coolers, flower pots, discarded tyres, and any other areas where stagnant water might accumulate, providing a conducive environment for mosquito breeding. The focus is on proactive detection and immediate intervention.
Sensitive areas identified by the department, including Ram Bagh, Jahajgarh, Putlighar, Majitha Road, and Ranjit Avenue, are under intensified monitoring. Residents in these localities, and across the district, have been strongly advised to ensure that water does not stagnate in or around their homes. Officials have issued a stern warning that persistent violations of these preventive directives could lead to legal action and penalties, underscoring the seriousness of the public health concern.
District Epidemiologist Dr. Harjot Kaur elaborated on the nature of dengue, describing it as a serious viral illness transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. She urged the public to maintain vigilance and to seek prompt medical attention if they experience symptoms indicative of dengue. These symptoms commonly include high fever, severe headache, body aches, pain behind the eyes, nausea, or the appearance of skin rashes.
The department has also issued an appeal for greater public cooperation with the field teams. Citizens are encouraged to actively participate in preventive measures, such as emptying and cleaning water storage containers on a weekly basis. Maintaining covered overhead tanks, regularly changing the water in coolers, and ensuring general cleanliness in and around their living spaces are also highlighted as crucial steps for personal and community protection.
Health officials stressed that the control of dengue hinges significantly on community participation. They have urged residents to promptly report any identified mosquito-breeding sites to the Health Department. This immediate reporting mechanism allows for timely intervention and mitigation efforts, preventing the potential escalation of the disease in the affected areas.
