Karnataka Farmers Trained in Low-Cost Biochar Production for Soil Health

The University of Agricultural Sciences-Bangalore (UAS-B) is actively training farmers across Karnataka in the production of biochar, a soil amendment derived from agricultural waste. This initiative aims to improve soil health and fertility, combat declining organic carbon levels, and offer a sustainable alternative to burning crop residues. The university is providing farmers with low-cost technology and training in the use of crop residue such as red gram, maize, and sunflower stalks to create biochar.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, researchers at UAS-B have developed a specially fabricated drum for biochar production. This method involves burning raw materials in a low-oxygen environment for approximately three hours. The resulting biochar is rich in carbon, with one kilogram containing 500 to 800 grams of carbon. This technology is being disseminated to farmers in 10 districts across Karnataka, with a focus on improving soil organic carbon (SOC), which has fallen below critical thresholds in over half of the state’s farmland. Districts like Kolar are particularly affected, with over 94% of farmland experiencing low SOC levels.
