Delhi Zoo Chinkara Dies After Horns Entangled in Cement Bags

A male chinkara has died at the National Zoological Park in Delhi after sustaining severe injuries when its horns became entangled in cement bags within its enclosure. The animal succumbed to its injuries the night after the incident, which occurred last Friday.

The Chenab Times has learned that the chinkara was housed in Beat No. 15, an enclosure that accommodates eight chinkaras, including two adult pairs and their offspring. Building repair work was reportedly underway in proximity to the enclosure, leading to the placement of cement bags in the vicinity.

According to a source from the Delhi zoo who spoke to PTI, one of the cement bags became entangled in the chinkara’s horns. This entanglement caused the animal to panic and thrash around its enclosure, resulting in multiple injuries. These injuries reportedly included a broken horn and fractures.

The source further alleged that the chinkara did not receive adequate care following the incident. It was also stated that no animal keeper was present near the enclosure at the time the chinkara’s horns became ensnared in the cement bags.

Zoo authorities have not yet responded to the allegations regarding the lack of adequate care or the circumstances surrounding the animal’s death. The incident raises concerns about safety protocols and the management of construction materials within animal enclosures at the national zoo.

The National Zoological Park, commonly known as Delhi Zoo, is a major attraction and home to a wide variety of animal species. Maintaining the well-being and safety of these animals is a paramount responsibility for zoo management. The investigation into this incident is expected to clarify the exact sequence of events and identify any lapses in protocol.
