PHILADELPHIA (The Chenab Times) – Authorities in Philadelphia have confirmed that an inert grenade was safely removed from a residence in the Hunting Park neighborhood early Thursday morning following a report of the object being thrown into a home. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Bomb Disposal Unit responded to the incident, which occurred on the 400 block of West Courtland Street.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the call was received by police shortly before 2 a.m. on Thursday, with a caller reporting that a grenade had been thrown into their residence. Responding officers secured the scene, and the Bomb Disposal Unit arrived to assess the situation.
The bomb squad safely removed the device from the property around 3:30 a.m. Authorities subsequently determined that the object was inert, meaning it was not an active explosive and posed no danger to the public. The Philadelphia Police Department has stated that no injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
As of Thursday morning, no arrests had been made in connection with the incident. Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the grenade being thrown into the home and are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the Philadelphia Police Department. The department has not released further details regarding potential motives or the specifics of how the device was thrown into the residence.
This is not the first time an inert or replica grenade has caused alarm in the Philadelphia area. In November 2019, an inert grenade was discovered at a SEPTA station in Old City, prompting a response from the bomb squad. In January 2012, a replica grenade led to a partial evacuation at the King of Prussia Mall, with authorities confirming it was a hollowed-out training device. In June 2018, a suspected grenade was found in the basement of a home in Germantown, and in February 2013, a sanitation worker found a grenade in the back of a trash truck, both of which were determined to be non-functional.
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Bomb Disposal Unit is a specialized unit responsible for handling explosive threats, including grenades, improvised explosive devices, and other hazardous materials. The unit operates under strict protocols to ensure public safety during such incidents.
