Thousands of government employees and pensioners from across Punjab are set to converge in Chandigarh on August 7 for a significant statewide rally. The demonstration, planned to coincide with the ongoing Punjab Assembly session, will voice long-pending demands that have remained unaddressed by the state administration. Key among these are the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the release of pending Dearness Allowance (DA) installments, and the regularization of contractual employees.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the protest is being organized under the joint banner of the Punjab Mulazam te Pensioners Sanjha Front and the Sanjha Mulazam Manch Punjab. These umbrella organizations have united employees from various government departments after multiple rounds of discussions with the state government failed to yield satisfactory outcomes.
Leaders of the participating unions have indicated that the rally will see widespread participation from across the state. Employees from sectors including teaching, Anganwadi services, and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) are expected to join the demonstration. The gathering aims to present a unified front and exert pressure on the government to address their grievances.
The demands articulated by the employee groups extend beyond the immediate concerns of DA and the OPS. They are also seeking the restoration of 37 allowances that have reportedly been withdrawn. Furthermore, there is a strong push for the immediate regularization of employees engaged on a contractual or outsourced basis, along with ensuring they receive full pay scales and associated benefits. The unions are also calling for the filling of numerous vacant posts within government departments and the implementation of other pending service-related benefits.
Specific attention is also being drawn to the Assured Career Progression (ACP) scheme, which employees wish to see reinstated. Additionally, the protesters aim to challenge certain government orders pertaining to probation periods and pay structures that they believe are detrimental to employee welfare. The coordinated protest signifies a growing discontent among the state’s public sector workforce over unresolved service-related issues.
Employee representatives have voiced concerns that despite repeated assurances from the government, their fundamental demands have not been adequately addressed. They view the August 7 rally as a crucial opportunity to demonstrate their collective strength and solidarity. The organizers have warned that if the government continues to delay taking decisive action, the current agitation could be escalated further, potentially disrupting public services.
The decision to hold the rally in Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, during the Assembly session is strategic. It aims to directly engage the attention of legislators and the state government, thereby maximizing the impact of their protest. The employees are hopeful that this concentrated effort will prompt the administration to prioritize their demands and engage in constructive dialogue to find a resolution.
