NEW DELHI: The Indian Railways has implemented a comprehensive set of measures aimed at safeguarding the lives of passengers and protecting railway property, the Union government informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that these initiatives were detailed by the Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, in response to a query posed during a parliamentary session. The minister outlined the multi-pronged strategy employed by the national transporter to address security concerns across its vast network.
Regular enforcement drives are conducted targeting anti-social elements, including individuals found under the influence of alcohol and other disruptive individuals, particularly in identified vulnerable sections or black spots. Apprehended individuals are prosecuted under relevant legal provisions, demonstrating a commitment to enforcing law and order.
Furthermore, train escorting parties have been instructed to maintain heightened vigilance in sensitive areas where incidents of vandalism on trains are frequently reported. This proactive approach aims to deter potential wrongdoers and ensure a safer travel environment.
Operation Sathi is one of the ongoing awareness programmes conducted in communities situated near railway tracks. These initiatives aim to sensitise the public about the dangers and consequences of stone-pelting incidents on moving trains, fostering a sense of responsibility among local populations.
Detailed guidelines have been established concerning the actions to be taken to effectively control stone-pelting incidents on trains. Following each incident, a thorough analysis is conducted to understand the root causes, paving the way for substantive measures to curb their recurrence.
To facilitate coordinated efforts, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) maintains regular liaison with the Government Railway Police (GRP) and local police. Critical information is shared between these agencies to enhance their collective ability to control the menace of stone-pelting on trains.
The formation of State Level Security Committee of Railways (SLSCR) has been a significant step in enhancing railway security across all states and Union Territories. These committees operate under the chairmanship of the respective Director General of Police or Commissioner of Police, ensuring regular monitoring and review of security arrangements for the railways at the state level.
Ensuring the safety of train operations is a paramount priority for Indian Railways. In addition to security measures, the national transporter is also investing in infrastructure such as pedestrian subways, equipped with safety fencing, to facilitate safer crossing of railway lines by pedestrians, cattle, and smaller vehicles, thereby preventing accidents.
As part of these safety enhancements, approximately 19,700 kilometers of fencing has been erected along railway tracks across the country. This includes sections located in states such as Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the widespread implementation of protective measures.
