India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day on August 15 with ceremonies, flag-hoisting events and cultural programmes being held across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to preside over the central celebration at the Red Fort in Delhi, where he will unfurl the national flag and address the nation.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, this year’s Independence Day ceremony has been themed around the 150th anniversary of the National Song Vande Mataram and the role of “Yuva Shakti” in advancing India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. The programme is being coordinated by the Ministry of Defence.
A key highlight of the celebrations will be the rendering of Vande Mataram at the Red Fort for the first time in the history of India’s Independence Day observances. The Defence Ministry has described the move as a tribute to the song’s enduring legacy and its contribution to the country’s freedom movement.
Official arrangements at the Red Fort include a ceremonial Guard of Honour comprising personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Delhi Police. After inspecting the guard, the Prime Minister will proceed to the ramparts of the Red Fort to hoist the Tricolour. The ceremony will also include a 21-gun salute and the singing of the National Anthem.
The Ministry of Defence has stated that the celebrations are intended to commemorate both the legacy of Vande Mataram and the aspirations of India’s youth. Thousands of invited guests, including achievers from various sectors and participants from states and union territories, are expected to attend the event.
Across India, state capitals, district headquarters and local administrations are holding Independence Day functions featuring ceremonial flag hoisting, cultural performances and tributes to freedom fighters. Similar events are being organised in schools, colleges and public institutions to mark the national occasion.
Security arrangements have been intensified in the national capital ahead of the celebrations, with authorities deploying personnel and monitoring key locations around the Red Fort and other important sites. The annual address from the Red Fort remains the centrepiece of India’s Independence Day observance and is expected to outline the government’s priorities and vision for the future.
