Federal investigators have identified live broadcast video captured aboard a news helicopter as a critical piece of evidence in determining the cause of a fatal crash in Chatsworth, California. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) stated that the recording, made during the helicopter’s final moments, is likely the most important evidence discovered so far. The video and audio from the broadcast are expected to undergo detailed analysis, including sound spectrum analysis, to identify engine changes and potential advisory tones that might have alerted the pilot.
The Airbus Helicopters AS350 B-2 helicopter, registered N358TV, crashed around 7 p.m. on Tuesday while on an electronic newsgathering flight. The aircraft was carrying pilot George Marciniw and reporter Eliana Moreno to cover a traffic collision. Tragically, the crash also claimed the life of a bystander on the ground, identified as 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia. Investigators are meticulously examining the wreckage, maintenance logs, security footage, weather reports, and witness interviews as part of their comprehensive investigation.
The NTSB has indicated that a preliminary report on the accident could be available in approximately 30 days, with a final report, including the probable cause, potentially taking up to 18 months to complete. Officials stressed that the on-scene investigation is focused on gathering factual data and that identifying a probable cause will be a lengthy process.
The crash occurred shortly after the helicopter had been covering a separate fatal Metro bus collision in the same general area. Television news crews, including those from the station that operated the downed helicopter, were present covering the initial incident when they realized one of their own aircraft was missing. The realization that it was their own helicopter that had gone down created a devastating scenario for the news organization, turning reporters into part of the story they were covering.
Aviation experts have suggested that mechanical failure in the 22-year-old aircraft could be a factor, as this model is commonly used for news and law enforcement due to its general reliability. The NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are working in tandem to understand the sequence of events leading up to the crash. If any immediate safety hazards are identified, the NTSB noted that safety recommendations could be issued to regulators.

The company operating the helicopter, Angel City Air Operation, a division of Welk Aviation, expressed devastation over the loss of their crew and the bystander, stating their full cooperation with the ongoing investigation and prioritizing support for the affected families during this difficult time.
