Lahore, Pakistan – Authorities in Pakistan have detained Aleema Khan, the sister of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in the eastern city of Lahore. The detention, which occurred on Sunday, comes just days before Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party plans to hold a protest rally next week.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Aleema Khan was taken into custody and subsequently transferred to Kot Lakhpat jail. Sources indicated that her detention is intended to last for 30 days under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960. This law empowers local police to arrest individuals deemed a threat to public peace and order.
The arrest of Aleema Khan, who has been an active advocate for her brother’s release from prison, is seen by the PTI as a move to stifle dissent ahead of the planned demonstration. Imran Khan has been imprisoned since 2023 and faces multiple legal challenges. The upcoming protest, scheduled for September 27, aims to pressure the government for his release.
Noreen Niazi, another sister of the PTI founder, confirmed to Geo News that she had received information about Aleema’s transfer to Kot Lakhpat jail. Niazi stated that her sister was taken into custody as she was leaving her residence. She expressed concern over the detentions, questioning the authorities’ actions against women participating in political advocacy.
Sheikh Waqas Akram, the Central Information Secretary for PTI, strongly condemned the arrest. He demanded that Aleema Khan be presented before a court of law without delay. Akram characterized the action as a reprisal against a sister for speaking out on behalf of her brother, posting his remarks on the social media platform X.
Individuals detained under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance have the recourse to challenge the detention order in the High Court. They can also submit a formal representation to the provincial government seeking a review of the order. This legal avenue provides a mechanism for challenging administrative detentions.
Imran Khan, a former international cricket star, was removed from power in April 2022 through a vote of no-confidence. Since his ouster, he has been involved in numerous legal proceedings across the country.
