SHOPIAN, Sept. 30: The Shah Payaan UT-Level Taekwondo Championship 2026 concluded in Shopian on Wednesday after bringing together more than 350 athletes from 17 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. The event was organised by the Taekwondo Association of District Shopian (TADS) under the aegis of the J&K Taekwondo Association (JKTA) and the J&K Sports Council (JKSC).
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the championship was held under the leadership of Ahtisham Zahoor, President of the District Taekwondo Association Shopian, and provided a platform for young taekwondo players to compete, gain experience and showcase their skills.
Riyaz Ahmad Choudhry, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Shopian, attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest. He appreciated the efforts of the organisers, coaches, referees and athletes for contributing to the successful conduct of the championship.
Several dignitaries were present during the closing ceremony, including Ahtisham Zahoor, President of the District Taekwondo Association Shopian; Rafi Ahmad Ganie, Chief LADC; Advocate Kamran Ashraf, Secretary DTAS; socio-political activist Owais Mushtaq Khan; Danish Hameed, Founder of Dayaan Construction; Ruhail Parray; Ghulam Rasool Khanday; Muzafar Ahmad; Suhail Ahmad; Syed Ashiq; Bashir Ahmad; Syed Taha; Shabir Ahmad, DYSO; Ashraf Nazir; and Rameez Ahmad.
Hashim Majeed, a National Referee, served as Referee Chairman for the championship, while Zain Nazir, also a National Referee, was Vice Referee Chairman. The referee panel supervised the competitions in accordance with the norms of the J&K Taekwondo Association.
Danish Manzoor, an international taekwondo athlete and Fit India Ambassador, was appointed as the observer by the J&K Taekwondo Association. Officials said his presence helped ensure the smooth and professional conduct of the championship.
The dignitaries also appreciated the efforts of the organising committee, including Tahdeen Rafiq, Organising Secretary, and Haris Gulzar, Convener, along with coaches, volunteers and athletes who contributed to the event. Special recognition was given to Aquib Gulzar, coach at the Khelo India Taekwondo Centre Shopian, who served as the technical director of the championship.
President of the J&K Taekwondo Association Rajesh Pangotra and Secretary Ramesh Chander Sharma congratulated the organising committee for successfully conducting the championship and extended their best wishes to all participating athletes.
The championship concluded with prize distribution and appreciation of athletes, officials and organisers, marking the end of a sporting event aimed at promoting taekwondo and youth participation in sports across Jammu and Kashmir.
