Authorities identified the suspect in the December 13 mass shooting at Brown University’s Barus and Holley building as 48-year-old Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente, a Portuguese national and former student at the university. He was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, on Thursday evening.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez announced the identification during a press conference. Neves-Valente’s last known address was in Miami, Florida. CNN reported he was discovered with two firearms, a satchel matching surveillance images, and evidence linking to the crime scene.
The shooting killed two students—sophomore Ella Cook from Alabama and freshman Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov from Virginia—and injured nine others during a finals review session. The New York Times noted investigators believe Neves-Valente is also connected to the December 15 homicide of MIT plasma physics professor Nuno Loureiro in Brookline, Massachusetts, a fellow Portuguese national.
An arrest warrant had been issued earlier Thursday. The multi-state manhunt ended after locating an abandoned vehicle near the storage facility. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha stated the investigation continues to establish motive and full timeline.
No ongoing threat to the public exists. Brown University canceled remaining exams and provided support services. Condolences continued from officials and the community as of Friday.
