Chennai: The much-anticipated Tamil film ‘Karuppu’, starring actor Suriya, faced significant release day disruptions on Thursday, May 14, 2026, with morning and afternoon shows being cancelled across Tamil Nadu. Director and actor RJ Balaji issued a tearful apology to fans, citing unforeseen circumstances and expressing hope for an evening release as financial issues impacting the film’s distribution were being addressed.
Financial Hurdles Lead to Show Cancellations
The release of ‘Karuppu’, which had generated considerable excitement among fans, was marred by unexpected production-related problems. Despite permission being granted for special 9 AM shows, theatre owners announced the cancellation of these screenings, leading to widespread disappointment. Producer S.R. Prabhu confirmed that the cancellations were due to financial reasons, with negotiations continuing late into Wednesday night and early Thursday morning failing to yield a resolution.
Reports suggest that the core of the issue lies with pending financial settlements related to the film’s production. Trade expert Sathish Kumar indicated that a financier settlement was the cause of the delay, and it was actor Suriya himself who reportedly stepped in to personally help resolve the matter. Sources claim Suriya took responsibility for clearing the dues to ensure the film’s release without further postponement. This intervention has reportedly given hope for the film to commence screening from the noon shows onwards.
Director’s Emotional Appeal to Fans
RJ Balaji, who is also making his directorial debut with ‘Karuppu’, addressed the situation in an emotional video message shared on social media. Visibly distressed, he apologized to fans who had traveled to theatres, acknowledging their disappointment. “I am really sorry to all the fans. It shouldn’t have happened. You must have travelled from long distances to reach the theatres… I am really sorry to all those who were stressed after learning that they couldn’t watch the film,” Balaji stated.
He further expressed his faith in the project’s eventual release, stating, “This film has always had hurdles, and somehow God has made us sail through all that and here we are after 32 months. This time as well, I have faith, complete faith in him.” Balaji urged fans to maintain their faith, adding in Tamil, “Karuppan (the deity) will shatter all obstacles. #Karuppu will release tomorrow in a fantastic fashion. Keep the faith. It will happen.” His plea resonated with fans, who have expressed their support and understanding for the team amidst the challenging circumstances.
Fan Reactions and Support
The sudden cancellation of shows led to a surge of reactions on social media, with fans expressing their disappointment and concern. Memes, emotional posts, and messages of support flooded platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Following the news of Suriya’s intervention, a sense of relief and renewed hope spread among the fan community. Many applauded the actor for his support towards the producers and the film, ensuring that the release date would be met, albeit with a delay.
The film, which also features Trisha Krishnan in a key role, had generated significant buzz with its trailer, songs, and promotions. The Tamil Nadu government had initially granted permission for special early morning shows, adding to the anticipation. However, the financial entanglements brought the planned celebrations to an abrupt halt.
As of Thursday afternoon, reports suggest that efforts were underway to resolve the remaining issues, with the expectation that ‘Karuppu’ would commence its theatrical run by the evening. The intervention by Suriya is being widely lauded as a significant gesture of commitment to the film and its team during a critical juncture.
