NEW DELHI: The Government of India has announced a one-day national mourning on July 13, 2026, following the demise of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Father Amir of the State of Qatar. The former Amir passed away on Sunday.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the national flag would be flown at half-mast across the country on all buildings where it is regularly displayed. Additionally, no official entertainment will be held on the designated day of mourning.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his deep condolences on the passing of the Father Amir. He described Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani as a visionary leader who steered Qatar towards significant development and prosperity, and who remained a steadfast friend of India.
The Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, is scheduled to visit Qatar in the near future. He will convey the condolences of the Government of India to the State of Qatar’s leadership. The decision to observe national mourning is intended as a mark of respect for the late Father Amir and to acknowledge his contributions and the longstanding relationship between India and Qatar.
The State of Qatar has expressed its appreciation for India’s gesture. The relationship between India and Qatar has historically been cordial and has seen significant growth in various sectors, including trade, energy, and cultural exchange. The Father Amir played a pivotal role in shaping modern Qatar and fostering its international relations.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani ascended to power in 1995 and led Qatar through a period of rapid transformation, diversifying its economy and enhancing its global standing. His reign saw the development of Al Jazeera Media Network and significant investments in infrastructure and foreign policy, positioning Qatar as a key player in regional and international affairs.
The Indian government’s decision to observe national mourning underscores the respect and value it places on its diplomatic ties and the personal relationships maintained with the leaders of friendly nations. The mourning period will allow citizens and government officials to reflect on the contributions of the late Amir and the enduring bond between the two countries. Official sources indicated that the timing of Minister Rijiju’s visit is being finalized to ensure it aligns with diplomatic protocols and to effectively convey India’s sentiments.
