Intensified Preparations and Candidate Selection
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has held meetings with YSRCP’s Regional Coordinators to review the party’s preparedness for the local body elections. The emphasis is on immediate commencement of candidate identification, ensuring that those fielded are capable of strengthening the party not only for the current elections but also for future electoral contests. Consultations with leaders at all levels and across various party tiers are being conducted to finalize candidate lists, fostering a collective approach towards the elections.
The YSRCP leadership has stressed the importance of bringing the entire party organization onto a single platform, ensuring coordinated efforts at the grassroots level. Local leadership is being continuously monitored, strengthened, and encouraged to work in tandem with party cadres. The party’s political and governance narrative is being directly conveyed to the public, with leaders tasked to highlight the perceived differences between the previous YSRCP administration and the current Telugu Desam Party-led government. They are also expected to articulate the challenges and alleged losses faced by the populace during the current tenure.

The YSRCP is operating in a dynamic political landscape within Andhra Pradesh. Recent reports indicate a fluid situation, with defections from the YSRCP to the TDP and discussions about potential shifts in political alliances. Observers suggest that the YSRCP might be gravitating towards the INDIA bloc, with backroom talks reportedly taking place with CPI state leaders on issues such as agricultural distress and drought conditions. The party’s stance on certain parliamentary issues may also see a change.
The GVMC elections are expected to be a significant contest, with the NDA alliance partners—TDP, Jana Sena, and BJP—also stepping up their preparations. Legal and Electoral Processes
In parallel, the YSRCP has been involved in legal proceedings concerning the electoral process. The party filed a petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court seeking directions for local body elections to be conducted only after the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the publication of the final voter list. The YSRCP’s contention was that using draft rolls with alleged inaccuracies, such as names of deceased persons and duplicate voters, could lead to the exclusion of eligible voters. The High Court has reserved its verdict on this petition.
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has seen elections in the past, with the YSRCP securing a majority in the 2021 elections, winning 58 out of 98 wards. The upcoming elections are crucial for the YSRCP to re-establish its dominance in the region and counter the strategies of the opposition alliances.
