NEET UG 2026 Admit Cards Released: Over 22 Lakh Aspirants Prepare for May 3 Medical Entrance Test

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially released the admit cards for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026. This development marks a crucial milestone for lakhs of medical aspirants, including students from Jammu and Kashmir, who are now one step closer to realizing their dreams of pursuing careers in medicine.

Registered candidates can download their hall tickets from the official website neet.nta.nic.in by logging in with their application number, date of birth or password, and the required security PIN or captcha. The NTA had initially planned to make the admit cards available by 10 AM on April 27 but released them late on April 26 following an announcement on its official X handle. Candidates are advised to download and verify the document immediately upon access.

The NEET UG 2026 examination is set to take place on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in a single afternoon shift from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (three hours duration). The exam will be conducted in offline pen-and-paper mode using OMR sheets across 552 cities in India and 14 international centres. This arrangement accommodates Indian nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and foreign candidates residing abroad.

Record-Breaking Participation

This year, approximately 22.6 lakh candidates have registered for NEET UG 2026, a significant increase compared to previous years. The surge underscores the growing popularity of medical education in India and the consolidation of various entrance tests into a single national-level examination since 2019. In 2018, around 13.3 lakh students appeared; the near-doubling in eight years highlights the intense competition and high stakes involved.

NEET serves as the sole gateway for admissions to undergraduate medical programmes, including MBBS, BDS, BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homeopathy), BUMS (Unani), BSMS (Siddha), BNYS (Naturopathy and Yoga), BVSc & AH (Veterinary Science), and B.Sc. Nursing. It opens doors to over 542 medical colleges, 313 dental colleges, 914 AYUSH institutions, 15 AIIMS campuses, and 2 JIPMER campuses.

Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

The NEET UG 2026 question paper will consist of 180 compulsory questions worth a total of 720 marks, restoring the pre-COVID format with no internal choices or optional sections. The subject-wise breakup is as follows:

  • Biology: 90 questions (360 marks) — split equally between Botany and Zoology. This section carries the highest weightage, and experts emphasize thorough revision of NCERT textbooks from Classes 11 and 12.
  • Physics: 45 questions (180 marks)
  • Chemistry: 45 questions (180 marks)

The marking scheme remains standard: +4 marks for each correct answer, -1 mark for each incorrect response, and 0 marks for unattempted questions. The exam will be available in 13 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. The language chosen during registration is final and will be reflected on the admit card.

Crucial Exam Day Guidelines

Candidates must strictly adhere to the instructions printed on the admit card to avoid any last-minute issues. Key requirements include:

  • A printed hard copy of the entire multi-page admit card (digital copies or mobile screenshots will not be accepted). It is recommended to take multiple colour printouts, as no duplicate admit cards will be issued under any circumstances.
  • A valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar card, Voter ID, PAN card, Passport, Driving Licence, or Ration Card with photograph).
  • Passport-size photograph (identical to the one uploaded during registration) to be affixed on the admit card.
  • A separate postcard-sized (4″ x 6″) photograph in the designated space.

New Security Measure: Aadhaar-based biometric authentication will be implemented at examination centres this year to enhance transparency and prevent impersonation.

Prohibited Items: Mobile phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth devices, calculators, log tables, any written or printed material, pencil boxes, geometry sets, and packed food items are strictly banned. NTA will provide ballpoint pens at the centre; candidates should not carry their own.

Diabetic candidates are permitted to carry sugar tablets and fresh fruits (such as bananas or oranges), subject to verification with a medical certificate. PwD/PwBD candidates must bring their valid disability certificate and scribe-related documents if applicable.

Gates at exam centres will open at 11:00 AM, with the last entry permitted until 1:30 PM. No candidate will be allowed inside after this time. Seating will be assigned by invigilators, and candidates must occupy only their designated seats. Centres allotted on the admit card are final; no change requests will be entertained.

Candidates should not sign the admit card in advance. The signature must be affixed in the presence of the invigilator at the examination centre. The admit card remains essential beyond exam day for counselling, seat allotment, and reporting to allotted institutions.

Post-Examination Process

After the exam on May 3, candidates can take the question paper home but must submit the OMR answer sheet before leaving. The provisional answer key along with scanned OMR sheets is expected to be released in June 2026, providing a window for raising objections. Final results and the commencement of counselling (All India Quota — 15% seats centrally managed, and State Quota — 85% seats handled by respective state authorities) will follow shortly thereafter.

Expected qualifying cutoffs (based on previous trends) are:

  • General category: 50th percentile
  • OBC, SC, ST: 40th percentile
  • PwD (General): 45th percentile

Qualifying the cutoff makes candidates eligible for counselling, but actual seat allotment depends on NEET rank, marks, category, and seat availability.

Preparation Tips and Mental Health Support

With less than a week remaining, aspirants should focus on light revision, selective practice of high-yield topics, and analysis of previous mock tests rather than covering new material. Emphasis on NCERT Biology, formula recall in Physics and Chemistry, and time management is advised. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule aligned with the afternoon exam timing can help optimize performance.

NTA and various state governments have highlighted the importance of mental well-being. Official helplines such as Tele-MANAS (14416 or 1-800-891-4416) offer free, confidential counselling in multiple languages for students feeling stressed or anxious.

Advisory for Candidates

  • Verify all details on the downloaded admit card (name, roll number, centre address, reporting time, etc.) and report any discrepancies immediately to the NTA helpdesk at 011-40759000, 011-69227700, or via email at neetug2026@nta.ac.in.
  • Rely solely on the official website neet.nta.nic.in and beware of fake websites or social media claims regarding paper leaks. Enhanced security protocols are in place to ensure a fair and transparent examination.
  • Preserve multiple copies of the admit card digitally (e.g., on DigiLocker) and physically for future use during the admission process.

For students in Jammu and Kashmir, NEET UG 2026 represents a vital opportunity to secure seats in prestigious medical institutions across the country. The Chenab Times extends its best wishes to all aspirants. Stay calm, focused, and reach your examination centres well in advance on May 3.
