One passenger was killed and more than 30 others sustained injuries when a sleeper bus overturned on the Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh following a tyre burst, police reported on Monday.
The accident occurred in the Musajhaag area, near Sarai Piparia village, around 12:30 a.m. The bus was en route from Khaga in Fatehpur district to Ludhiana.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the sleeper coach’s tyre suddenly burst near the 202-kilometre mark of the expressway. Senior Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn multiple times before crossing the divider and landing on the opposite lane.
Anuj, a 34-year-old resident of Fatehpur district, was identified as the passenger who died at the scene. More than 30 passengers suffered injuries, with six in critical condition who have been referred to Bareilly for advanced medical treatment. Police reported that several passengers were trapped inside the severely damaged bus.
SSP Sharma noted that the outcome could have been more tragic had the bus fallen into a deep ditch adjacent to the expressway. Following the incident, police teams from Musajhaag, Dataganj, and surrounding police stations, accompanied by health department personnel and ambulances, were dispatched to the location to commence rescue operations.
Rescuers worked to extract trapped passengers by breaking windows and cutting through seats. The injured were transported to nearby community health centres and the district hospital. Approximately 24 passengers sustained minor injuries, while the six critically injured were admitted to the district hospital, with some later referred to a hospital in Bareilly due to the severity of their condition.
District Magistrate Avneesh Rai indicated that authorities are closely monitoring the situation. He confirmed that some passengers with minor injuries were discharged after receiving treatment, while six remain hospitalised, some requiring referral to Bareilly for specialized care. Preliminary investigations suggest that overspeeding, in conjunction with the tyre burst, may have been the primary causes of the accident.
