Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister Orders Swift Enumeration of Cyclone-Induced Crop Losses

VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu has mandated a swift and comprehensive enumeration of crop losses resulting from a recent cyclone, emphasizing the need for field-level verification to ensure no affected farmer is overlooked. The directive was issued during a review meeting where preliminary reports on crop damage and the ongoing assessment process were discussed. The Minister stressed the importance of transparency and accuracy in recording the extent of damage to both agricultural and horticultural crops.

Minister Reviews Preliminary Damage Reports

Reviewing the initial findings, Mr. Atchannaidu underscored the critical need for on-ground assessments by officials from the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments. He instructed Joint Directors, Assistant Directors, and other field-level staff to treat the enumeration as a top priority. These officials have been directed to personally visit affected areas, gauge the ground situation, and meticulously record the details of every farmer who has suffered crop damage. The objective is to ensure that the final lists accurately reflect the real impact of the cyclone on the farming community.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of submitting comprehensive district-wise and crop-wise damage details to the government at the earliest. This detailed reporting is crucial for the formulation and implementation of effective relief and rehabilitation measures for the affected farmers. The cyclone’s impact has been particularly severe in several districts, with preliminary estimates indicating significant damage to agricultural land.

Extent of Crop Damage Assessed

According to preliminary estimates from the Agriculture Department, the cyclone affected 1,229 villages spread across 190 mandals. Crop losses have been reported by an estimated 71,796 farmers, with agricultural crops damaged over approximately 44,029 hectares. As of the latest reports, enumeration had been completed for 726 farmers in 45 villages across 19 mandals. However, details relating to an additional 1,289 hectares were still pending final recording. The ongoing enumeration aims to capture the full extent of the devastation, which has impacted staple crops and horticultural produce across various regions of the state.

The Agriculture Department has been utilizing various methods, including field inspections and, in some instances, satellite data, to expedite the assessment process. For instance, reports from October 2025 indicated that initial estimates suggested crop damage over approximately 1.58 lakh hectares, affecting numerous villages across multiple districts. Specific districts like Konaseema, Krishna, Kakinada, and East Godavari were identified as the worst-hit, with substantial crop loss reported in these areas. The process involves displaying lists of affected farmers for social audit at local centers, where objections and requests are being addressed to ensure fairness and accuracy in the compensation process.

The Minister’s directive to expedite the enumeration process reflects the government’s commitment to providing timely support to farmers who have been adversely affected by the natural calamity.
