Police in Ludhiana have apprehended a man accused of attempting to extort ₹10 lakh from a real estate company by threatening to tarnish its reputation on social media. The arrest occurred as the accused was allegedly accepting ₹6 lakh in partial fulfillment of the demand.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the accused, identified as Manpreet Singh, a resident of Ludhiana Heights, was apprehended by the Haibowal police. The police recovered ₹6 lakh in cash and a mobile phone from his possession at the time of his arrest. A case has been registered against him under charges of extortion and criminal intimidation.
The complaint that led to the arrest was filed by Arun Thakur, the manager of the real estate firm, Ludhiana Heights. According to the complainant’s statement to the authorities, he has been working as the manager for the company in Block-E. The firm has been actively involved in constructing residential flats in the area since 2019.
Thakur alleged that over the preceding three months, Manpreet Singh had been consistently publishing defamatory content against the company across various social media platforms. These posts, according to the complaint, were part of an elaborate scheme to damage the firm’s standing. The accused purportedly threatened to inflict further disrepute and financial harm upon the company, demanding a sum of ₹10 lakh to cease his campaign.
The modus operandi involved leveraging social media to create negative publicity, thereby pressuring the company into paying the demanded sum. The real estate firm, which has been operational for several years and is engaged in significant development projects, became the target of this alleged extortion attempt. The police are currently investigating the extent of Manpreet Singh’s involvement and any potential accomplices.
